Justice and Moral Responsibility in Literature

Course Description: Seminar, three hours. Discussion of literature (drama and fiction) addressing themes of law, justice, government, and moral responsibility in public context.
After two years in a legal services program for the poor, Professor Lowenstein served four years as Deputy Secretary of State of California under then Secretary of State Jerry Brown. After he was elected governor in 1974, Brown appointed him as the first chairman of the Fair Political Practices Commission, which regulates campaign finance and lobbyists in California. He served a complete term and in 1979 joined the UCLA Law School faculty. He specialized in election law and published the first twentieth century textbook on that subject in 1995. In 2009 he retired from the law school faculty in order to devote his time to the new Center for the Liberal Arts and Free Institutions (CLAFI). He has served as director of CLAFI since its creation, and teaches Honors 153 and 158 under CLAFI’s sponsorship. UCLA Law – Daniel Lowenstein
